Valentine?s Day brings love to Variety Show
by Anthony Glassman
Cleveland--The Womyn?s Variety Show?s second year in Kangesser Hall at Park Synagogue on Valentine?s Day marked the 34th year of success for Oven Productions? flagship event.
Event producer and musician Marcia Sindelar gave a conservative estimate of the crowd at well over 400 women, noting that it was comparable to last year. In 2008, there were nearly 500 women in attendance.
Iris Bishop returned to emcee the show again this year, which included performances by the Jane Deans, Early Girl, Backbone, Betsy Marshall and Mary Martin, Sindelar herself and many others.
The date of the event was also a major factor in the festivities, with a Valentine?s theme running throughout the decorations and the performances.
It also marked the first time that the variety show held a raffle, and prizes ranged from Gay People?s Chronicle subscriptions and bar tabs to Cleveland International Film Festival tickets, dinners and wellness treatments.
The raffle was a fundraiser to get a jump on financing for next year?s 35th anniversary Womyn?s Variety Show, which promises to be the biggest and best in an auspicious history of productions.
Following the performances, the Fabulous Variety Show Party had guests dancing to music spun by DJ Freeze and DJ Debra.
Sindelar said that the 35th anniversary event will once again be held at Kangesser Hall.
?We love Kangesser Hall,? she said. ?It is an ideal place--plenty of safe parking, great stage, comfortable seating, the party room is huge and roomy, there?s plenty of room for vendors, dancers and just hanging around and talking.?
?Next year we will have even more giveaways and some very big prizes,? she said, promising that the raffle will be back.
The date of next year?s event will be Saturday, February 13. Those interested in performing or volunteering can contact Sindelar, who fronts the Swamp Boogie Band as well as heading Oven Productions, at 216-3750780.
